Yes – Google Chrome OS is an open source project and will be available to use at no cost.

What companies is Google working with to support Google Chrome OS?
The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Among others, these companies include Acer, Adobe, ASUS, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, and Toshiba.

I’m a developer – how can I work with you?
Thanks for your interest. Later this year, the Google Chrome OS code will be open sourced. We’re looking forward to working with the open source community and making our own small contribution to the great work being done out there. Please stay tuned.

グーグル、「Google Chrome OS」の協力企業を明らかに

米国時間7月7日に発表された「Google Chrome OS」について多くのPCメーカーが沈黙を守るなか、Googleは8日午後になって、同OSを2010年発売予定のネットブックに搭載するうえで連携している企業を発表した。

Googleの製品管理担当バイスプレジデントであるSundar Pichai氏によるGoogle Chrome Blogの 8日午後の投稿によると、同社はさまざまなPCメーカーやチップメーカー、そしてソフトウェア企業と協力しているという。具体的にはAcerやAdobe Systems、ASUSTeK Computer、Freescale Semiconductor、Hewlett-Packard（HP）、Lenovo、Qualcomm、Texas Instrumentsといった企業が挙げられている。

米CNET Newsはこのブログ投稿に先立って、ASUSやLenovoがChrome OSの搭載に向けてGoogleと協力していくことになるだろうと予想していた。ASUSはネットブック分野のパイオニアであり、Windows以外の OSの搭載に向けて他社と協力していく姿勢を明らかにしていたため、その予想は容易だった。

また、Acerは急成長しているノートPCメーカーであり、ネットブックの販売を後押しするために柔軟な価格設定を行ってもいるため妥当だ。もち ろんHPも、世界最大のPCメーカーとして、コンシューマー向けのOSにまつわるあらゆる取り組みに参加するのは当然のことだろう。

ここで注目すべきは、今回発表された企業の中にDellの名前がないことである。Dellは世界第2位のPCメーカーである（ただし、Acerか ら激しく追い上げられている）ものの、8日午前に取材した際には、この件に関してGoogleと積極的な協力関係にあるとは述べなかった。同社は 「Dellは製品開発プロセスの管理を行う一環として、そして将来的な製品を検討するうえで、新しいテクノロジを常に評価している」と述べるに留まった。

Two years after acquiring GrandCentral, Google is about to open an updated version of the service to all US users. Google Voice is a free service that provides one number for all your phones, so you can add some features that help you manage phone calls: blocking calls, recording calls, answering from any of your phones, transcribing voicemail and more.

NBC reports that the service will start to be publicly available today and Google confirms the news: “Invites to people on reservations list starting to go out today.” In March, Google Voice was released as an upgrade to the existing GrandCentral users and you could request an invitation using a form from Google’s site.

Googleはインターネットを利用した電話サービス「Google Voice」の正式運用をまだ開始していないが、同サービスの案内メールの発送を順番待ちリストに登録したユーザーに拡大したことを、米国時間6月25日に明らかにした。

Google Voiceは、2007年にGoogleが買収した新興企業GrandCentralの技術を利用したサービスで、ユーザーに簡単につながる新しい電話番号を提供している。

Google Voiceの番号に電話をかけると、たとえばユーザーの自宅、職場、携帯電話のすべてに同時に着信する。ユーザーは発信者もしくは発信者のグループ別に、 任意の電話を鳴らすように設定したり、特定の発信者は直接ボイスメールにつながるように設定したりできる。Googleは着信後にボイスメールを文章化 し、Google Voiceユーザーに電子メールで伝えるか、Gmailと同様のインターフェースでメッセージを読んだり聞いたりできるようにする。
